A Gambler’s New Years Resolutions

Of course the beginning of January is always full of hopes, dreams and resolutions. As a gambler, my new years resolutions are these…

1) Read More About Gambling

Not only do I want to expand my collection of gambling literature,  I want to study and understand more about the games I love. I’m going to re-read Super System by Doyle Brunson for a start, and then read one new book about gambling strategy every month, starting with the bestseller Blackjack Attack in February.

2) Practice Gambling Online

A lot of reputable online casino have  a practice play option that allows you to play for imaginary credits instead of staking real money. This is great as it allows me to try out new systems and strategies without risking my cash. I resolve to play online in practice mode more when I feel like trying something new.

3) Start A Poker Circle

Poker has become a recent interest of mine and while playing online is fun, I want to develop my skills of bluffing and reading others in live games as well. So I’m going to start a poker circle with a few friends and we can have a poker night once a week and perhaps discuss the strategies we’re discovering as well.

Well, those are my new years’ resolutions for gambling – what are yours?

Aspers Casino breaks record with 1 million visitors

Westfield London The Village

A casino in the UK has broken all previous records of attendance, seeing an astonishing one million guests through its doors in 2012. The casino in question is the Aspers Casino, which is located in the Westfield Shopping Centre, the biggest shopping centre in Europe. In a year that saw the Olympics bring challenging restrictions to casino patronage, Aspers’ new record is seen in an even better light.

With parking restrictions around the Olympics providing an extra challenge, it is suprising that Aspers could break the record in such a difficult time. The fact that they’ve got a mind-boggling hundred and fifty slots, seventy gaming tables and a poker area that seats three hundred people, Aspers has certainly built an alluring gaming experience, and the people certainly came and filled up those impressively large facilities.

London is hardly a sleepy town with nothing but a casino to offer, but with Aspers’ constantly striving to create an international-standard gaming experience brings both locals and tourists back to Aspers again and again, giving them an unbelievable night that smacks of a modern London. And with every fun night that individuals experience at Aspers, they contribute to breaking even more records in the future.

WSOP First Online Tournament Has A Winner

Raj Pooni won the World Series Of Poker’s first online tournament, a milestone for the most renowned poker tournament in the world.

The 2012-13 circuit at River Rock Casino was the first WSOP event in Canada, and also featured a final table streamed online live with hole cards, another first for WSOP. Raj Pooni won Event 11, which had a $320 buy-in and was played in the style of No-Limit Hold ‘Em.

This is really groundbreaking because the WSOP started as a one-room tournament in the seventies and has grown to the most prestigious gambling event in the world. Moving into the future is absolutely

key for anything as big as WSOP, and it’s not only encouraging those not in the epicentre of the poker world to participate, but democratizes the game, making it more about skill and less about who has the time and money to get their face to a poker tournament.

So Raj Pooni not only gets a sweet $16,725 winning rake, but gets his name in the history books as the first winner of the first truly virtual WSOP tournament. Not too shabby Mr Pooni, not too shabby.

Betable Hailed As The Future Of Online Gambling By Betable CEO

So, I’ve blogged before about Betable and its nifty service of providing a back-end gambling solution to social gaming and app developers. It’s a booming business and after its first partner, Big Fish Casino, went live and became the top app in the iStore, things are only getting rosier for Chris Griffin (no, not the Family Guy Chris Griffin, though perhaps if he enjoys online gambling this could affect him favorably too). Now the CEO has gone on to tell Forbes that  his 18-strong, million dollar company is the future of online gambling.

What do you think, dear readers? Is this marketing hubris or the start of an online gambling revolution?

Cool new app lets you beat the Blackjack table

There are plenty of books and even video series that promise to teach gamblers the age-old systems of counting cards. But now new technology is being utilized to teach the newest techniques. Check out this video on the new app. Blackjack Domination promises to take Blackjack from a gamble to a sure thing.

I’ll be trying it and hope to post a review soon – dear readers, have you found card counting success with this or a similar program? Tell me in the comments!

Hilarious gambling dream interpretations

While I’m not much for the esoteric and otherworldly, I happened to come across quite an old-fashioned dream interpretation dictionary and looked up some gambling-related phrases. It gave me a good chuckle – have you had any of the dreams below?

To dream of a card game where you hold a hand of spades : you will be a widow encumbered with a large estate. Naturally.

To dream that you are gambling: If you win, you’ll have low associations and pleasure at the expense of others. If you lose, disgraceful conduct will be the undoing of one near to you. So you’re pretty much

Every dream is bad news! (Photo credit: OnFoot4now (Didi))

buggered either way.

To dream of playing Poker: you are warned against evil company; young women having this dream will lose their moral distinctiveness if they find themselves playing poker. This book seems to have it out for women especially, saying that everything they dream will mean that they’ll have a bad reputation at best, at worst ugly children and a big house that you have to clean yourself.

These perfectly sensible and optimistic predictions are from  10,000 Dreams Interpreted by the imposing-sounding Gustavus Hindman Miller. I’d suggest you pick it up if you’re keen for a laugh.

Hilarious “Poker Face” cover

I’ll admit to being a huge musical theatre fan, and nothing makes me happier than a capella covers of pop songs. If not, perhaps, a capella covers of pop songs with hilarious commitment to the original choreography. Watch and enjoy…

And before you judge, this is definitely related to the gambling industry. It’s a cover of ‘Poker Face’ after all.

Luckity is the next big thing

A new site called Luckity.com is making waves in the American gambling industry. While styling itself as a social gaming outfit such as Farmville and other widely popular, animated and bright sites overseas, its secret weapon is that players actually bet on horse races rather than random number generators that most online gambling outfits use.

This strange choice is actually exploiting a loophole in the American online gambling industry, which allows online betting on horse races across state lines. While this may be a small market at the moment, Luckity.com has actually removed the niche of needing to be interested in horse races and presented the betting as simple games that anyone could understand – for example, a fruit spinning wheel or choosing bingo numbers.  It’s a creative and interesting way to get around the usual regulations limiting online gambling in the States.

What do you think of this new site – brilliant or dangerous? While the kid-friendly graphics may appeal to a much wider audience than just a plain horse-betting website. But is that a good thing? Will you be logging on to Luckity?
