1) Read More About Gambling

Not only do I want to expand my collection of gambling literature,  I want to study and understand more about the games I love. I’m going to re-read Super System by Doyle Brunson for a start, and then read one new book about gambling strategy every month, starting with the bestseller Blackjack Attack in February.

2) Practice Gambling Online

A lot of reputable online casino have  a practice play option that allows you to play for imaginary credits instead of staking real money. This is great as it allows me to try out new systems and strategies without risking my cash. I resolve to play online in practice mode more when I feel like trying something new.

3) Start A Poker Circle

Poker has become a recent interest of mine and while playing online is fun, I want to develop my skills of bluffing and reading others in live games as well. So I’m going to start a poker circle with a few friends and we can have a poker night once a week and perhaps discuss the strategies we’re discovering as well.

Anyway, this is vaguely related to gambling news because some guy did not just make a good investment and made a million on the stock market; he won six figures at Aura in Central London and proceeded to piss away over a tenth of that in a single night of wild boozing and partying. The guy in question is PR manager Dexter Koh, who bragged about his dubious spending habits on twitter, after which it was picked up by The Mirror, which I can’t seem to put down even though it’s so terrible it hurts my eyes.

Paddy Power’s offering 8/1 odds on both Mary and Victoria – it’s interesting to see all these feminine names come up; is it the monarchy or just that nobody can imagine Kate Middleton creating anything that won’t look adorable in a pink onesie?

Wonder what odds William Hill will give me on the name “Moonrise  Rothko  Zuma”? I’d put a tenner on that.

PokerStars, the now notorious online gambling company, is in talks to buy a land-based casino in Atlantic City for a whopping $50 million, reports the Wall Street Journal. You may wonder what the point is of a company that settled a ridiculously scandalous lawsuit by the US Justice Department for over ten times that figure would be doing considering an investment in the USA.

Well, with New Jersey’s changing online gambling laws, owning an Atlantic City casino would allow PokerStars to operate legally as an online gambling provider in the US. Of course, though PokerStars admitted no wrongdoing in their notorious lawsuit, the fact remains that hundreds of players lost their money and they agreed to settle for $731 million with the Justice Department when accused of bank fraud, illegal gambling and money laundering – a curious thing to do when one is innocent.

Whether having a legal foothold in America will bring the disgraced company back to life is debatable, but the purchase of a land-based casino in Atlantic City is certainly good news for one of the weakest gambling centres in the world today. Sources say that the deal may still fall through, but if it comes through, it may mean a new era for PokerStars. Do you think they’ll regain the trust of the poker playing public?
